About Weir Bowen LLP

About Us

Weir Bowen LLP is a law firm with the experience, skill, integrity, and commitment required to provide reliable advice and effective representation in civil litigation. Our clients are often struggling with the consequences — to themselves or their loved ones — of losses beyond their control. If you are reading this, it may be that you are trying to decide what to do next in a situation you never expected to face.

Since the 1980s, our practice has been focused on matters involving medical malpractice, personal injury, property damage, fire loss, occupier’s liability, products liability, insurance coverage, disability insurance, wills and estates, professional errors and omissions, contract, corporate, commercial, employment, real estate, and the environment.

Our lawyers have extensive experience in alternative dispute resolution processes, including negotiation, mediation, and judicial dispute resolution. They have advised and represented parties in litigation in Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and British Columbia, and have been counsel in precedent-setting cases in the Supreme Court of Canada, the Court of Appeal of Alberta, the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, the Court of Appeal of the Northwest Territories, and the Northwest Territories Supreme Court.

Over the years, our medical malpractice team has grown to be one of the largest in Canada, representing more medical malpractice clients than any other firm in Western Canada. In the past ten years, we have settled cases and recovered judgments in malpractice actions that collectively exceed $100 million. Our partners and associates have provided papers and given presentations throughout Canada to lawyers and healthcare providers on medical malpractice issues.

In 2018, our lawyers started teaching a course on “Medical Malpractice” at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Law. Weir Bowen lawyers are founding members of the Birth Injury Lawyers Alliance of Canada and the Western Canadian Medical Malpractice Conference.

INDIGENOUS LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The lands on which Edmonton sits and the North Saskatchewan River that runs through it have been the sites of natural abundance, ceremony and culture, travel and rest, relationship building, making, and trading for Indigenous peoples since time immemorial. Edmonton is located within Treaty 6 Territory and within the Metis homelands and Metis Nation of Alberta Region 4. We acknowledge this land as the traditional territories of many First Nations such as the Nehiyaw (Cree), Denesuline (Dene), Nakota Sioux (Stoney), Anishinaabe (Saulteaux) and Niitsitapi (Blackfoot).

Weir Bowen acknowledges the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting.
