Steps in a civil action

In Alberta, most personal injury actions are brought in the Court of Queen’s Bench. The exceptions include actions for $50,000.00 or less which can be brought in the Civil Division of the Provincial Court, and actions against practitioners employed by the Federal Government that can be brought in the Federal Court.

The steps in an action brought in the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta include:

  • pleadings
  • notices to admit
  • affidavits of records
  • questioning for discovery
  • applications
  • service of expert reports
  • trials
  • appeals
