Congratulations to Shelagh McGregor on Her Appointment as King’s Counsel (KC)

We are proud to announce that Shelagh McGregor, partner at Weir Bowen LLP, has been appointed King’s Counsel (KC) for the Province of Alberta.

The designation of King’s Counsel is one of the highest professional honours a lawyer can receive. Appointments are made by the lieutenant Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Minister of Justice, recognizing lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional competence, integrity, leadership, and service to the profession and the community.

Throughout her career, Shelagh has exemplified these qualities. She has dedicated her practice to guiding individuals and families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives, particularly in cases involving catastrophic injury and medical system failures. Her advocacy is marked by a rare balance of formidable litigation skill and deep empathy, always grounded in a trauma-informed approach that prioritizes trust, dignity, and support.

Shelagh’s leadership extends beyond the courtroom. She is widely respected for her mentorship of junior lawyers, her commitment to professionalism, and her longstanding contributions to the legal community. Her work has been repeatedly recognized by her peers, including being named Edmonton’s Lawyer of the Year in Personal Injury Litigation by Best Lawyers in Canada in both 2022 and 2025.

This appointment as King’s Counsel is a fitting recognition of Ms. McGregor’s excellence, integrity, and lasting impact on the practice of law in Alberta. We congratulate her on this well-deserved honour and are proud to celebrate this milestone alongside her.

INDIGENOUS LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The lands on which Edmonton sits and the North Saskatchewan River that runs through it have been the sites of natural abundance, ceremony and culture, travel and rest, relationship building, making, and trading for Indigenous peoples since time immemorial. Edmonton is located within Treaty 6 Territory and within the Metis homelands and Metis Nation of Alberta Region 4. We acknowledge this land as the traditional territories of many First Nations such as the Nehiyaw (Cree), Denesuline (Dene), Nakota Sioux (Stoney), Anishinaabe (Saulteaux) and Niitsitapi (Blackfoot).

Weir Bowen acknowledges the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting.
