Ian Miller is a partner at Weir Bowen LLP whose litigation practice focuses on personal injury and long-term disability claims. He advocates for people facing serious injuries, disrupted livelihoods and disputes over the benefits or compensation they need.
Ian joined Weir Bowen as an articling student in July 2016 and progressed to partnership. His work reflects an understanding that litigation is about more than legal principles: an injury or denied disability claim can affect a client’s health, financial security and family life.
Ian has experience advocating for his clients in the Alberta Court of Justice, Alberta Court of King’s Bench, and Alberta Court of Appeal.
He has obtained judgments for his clients in the Court of King’s Bench (Samra v. Houle, 2025 ABKB 24) and has been part of legal teams associated with DD v Wong Estate, 2019 ABQB 171 and KY v Bahler, 2023 ABKB 280, cases involving catastrophic birth injuries. These matters demonstrate his involvement in complex litigation alongside colleagues at the firm.
Ian contributes to Weir Bowen’s client education through written articles and appearances on Ask the Lawyer. In April 2026, he joined Cynthia Carels for a discussion of disability claims, including denied benefits, mental health conditions and invisible disabilities. He also appeared in a November 2024 episode on wrongful death claims.
Ian’s writing addresses practical issues in personal injury litigation, including assessing damages, contributory negligence, mitigation of loss and the steps involved in a civil action. He has also written about informed consent in medical treatment.
While attending law school at the University of Alberta, Ian played on the Faculty of Law hockey team, the Tortfeasors. His interest in hockey has continued as a player and coach. Outside work, he enjoys walking his dog, spending time with family and friends, and cheering for the Edmonton Oilers.

The lands on which Edmonton sits and the North Saskatchewan River that runs through it have been the sites of natural abundance, ceremony and culture, travel and rest, relationship building, making, and trading for Indigenous peoples since time immemorial. Edmonton is located within Treaty 6 Territory and within the Metis homelands and Metis Nation of Alberta Region 4. We acknowledge this land as the traditional territories of many First Nations such as the Nehiyaw (Cree), Denesuline (Dene), Nakota Sioux (Stoney), Anishinaabe (Saulteaux) and Niitsitapi (Blackfoot).
Weir Bowen acknowledges the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting.
